Hatay’s agricultural sector is bustling as the potato harvest begins. Abdurrahman Türkmen, the Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry, recently visited local farmers to assess yields and discuss production challenges. According to 2023 data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), Hatay is among the key potato-producing regions, contributing significantly to Turkey’s annual production of over 5 million tons.
During his visit, Türkmen emphasized the importance of efficient farming techniques to maximize yield, especially as global potato demand continues to rise. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reports that global potato production reached 376 million metric tons in 2022, with climate-resilient varieties becoming increasingly vital.
Soybean Cultivation Progress Under TAKE Project
In addition to potatoes, Türkmen inspected soybean fields cultivated under the TAKE Project, which provides subsidized seeds to encourage crop diversification. Early observations indicate strong soybean germination, aligning with Turkey’s goal to reduce dependency on imported animal feed.
Soybean production in Turkey has seen a steady increase, with 2023 yields reaching approximately 180,000 tons, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. The TAKE Project aims to further boost this by supporting small-scale farmers with high-quality seeds and agronomic advice.
The start of the potato harvest in Hatay highlights the region’s agricultural strength, while soybean initiatives under the TAKE Project demonstrate a commitment to sustainable farming. Continued government support and technological adoption will be crucial in maintaining productivity amid climate and market challenges.
