Dangjin City in South Chungcheong Province is supporting potato farmers by supplying 2 tons of ‘Chubaek’ seed potatoes for autumn cultivation. The Dangjin Agricultural Technology Center announced that applications will open on a first-come, first-served basis starting August 22.
High-Quality Seed Potatoes for Higher Yields
The seed potatoes being distributed were produced through tissue culture by the South Chungcheong Smart Agriculture Headquarters and further propagated by the Dangjin Agricultural Technology Center. This original seed-grade potato is expected to cover 1.25 hectares, with an estimated yield of 25 tons (based on standard seed performance).
Why ‘Chubaek’?
- Short dormancy (under 50 days) and fast growth cycle (80–85 days), making it ideal for autumn and spring planting.
- Can be reused for spring planting after autumn harvest, improving farmers’ self-sufficiency.
- Resistant to common rot issues, but proper drainage management is crucial, especially in clay soils.
Expanding Seed Potato Self-Sufficiency
Dangjin City is working to diversify potato varieties and strengthen local seed production through tissue culture technology. By collaborating with the Smart Agriculture Headquarters, the city ensures a stable supply of high-quality seed potatoes year-round.
The ‘Chubaek’ seed potato initiative is a strategic move to enhance autumn potato farming efficiency and reduce dependency on external seed sources. With proper cultivation techniques, farmers can achieve higher yields and better profitability.
