This robust growth spanned all potato categories, reflecting a healthy market demand for this staple crop.

Category-Specific Insights
A recent release by Potatoes USA highlighted that the most significant sales volume increases were in deli-prepared sides (7.8%) and fresh potatoes (7.6%). The dollar sales of fresh potatoes nearly reached USD 1.1 billion, reflecting a 0.6% year-over-year increase.
Within the fresh potato segment, notable volume sales increases were seen across several types, except for red and white potatoes, which saw declines of 3.3% and 3.1%, respectively. Purple potatoes led the growth with an 18.9% increase in volume, followed by medley (11.5%), yellow (11.2%), and russet (10.8%) potatoes. This is significant considering russet and yellow potatoes make up 63% and 16% of fresh volume sales, respectively.
In terms of dollar sales within the fresh category:
- Purple potatoes increased by 12.4%.
- Medley potatoes increased by 9%.
- Yellow potatoes increased by 8%.
- Fingerling potatoes increased by 3.4%.
- Petite potatoes increased by 1.1%.
Conversely, dollar sales for red potatoes decreased by 5.5%, white potatoes by 1.7%, and russet potatoes by 0.2%.
Packaging Trends
The data also showed interesting trends in packaging sizes. All pack sizes smaller than 10 pounds saw increases in both volume and dollar sales. The largest sales volume increase was for 8-pound bags (25.5%), followed by:
- 10-pound bags (9.1%)
- 5-pound bags (8%)
- Bags under 2 pounds (7.6%)
- Bags weighing 2-4 pounds (4.2%)
However, bags greater than 10 pounds experienced a decline in volume sales (-25.8%), with a 5.9% decrease in dollar sales for 10-pound bags and a significant 36.8% decrease for bags over 10 pounds.
The surge in potato sales in early 2024 indicates a strong consumer demand and a robust market for various potato products. The trends suggest a preference for smaller packaging sizes and certain potato types, highlighting shifting consumer preferences and economic influences. As the market evolves, producers and retailers must adapt to these changes, focusing on sustainable growth and meeting the diverse needs of consumers.
