Potato Power Surge: A Thriving Market Boosts U.S. Potato Exports to New Heights

In the period from July to September 2023, the export landscape for American potatoes experienced a notable upswing, particularly in the fresh potato sector. According to Potatoes USA intel, the total value of U.S. potato exports surged by 10.8%, reaching an impressive USD 607 million. Despite a marginal 0.2% increase in export volume (452,000 metric tons fresh weight equivalent), the growth in dollar value signifies a robust market expansion.

The driving force behind this export surge was the soaring demand for fresh potatoes, which witnessed a remarkable 10.4% increase in volume and a corresponding 10.1% boost in dollar value. Notably, the Mexican market emerged as a key player, experiencing a staggering 48.8% rise in fresh potato imports. This surge amounted to over 17,300 metric tons, attributed to Mexico opening its entire market to U.S. fresh potato exports in May 2022. However, it’s essential to note a contrasting trend, with fresh potato exports to Canada declining by 3.3% and to Taiwan by 6%, compared to the previous year.

Over the same period, the frozen potato sector exhibited a divergent trend, with an 11.6% increase in value but an 8.6% decrease in volume. While the Philippines celebrated a 5% growth in frozen potato imports, South Korea, Malaysia, and Japan experienced notable declines of 27%, 45%, and 20%, respectively.

Dehydrated potatoes, on the other hand, saw an 8.9% increase in dollar value and a robust 13.3% surge in volume. The growth in this category was driven by a substantial 20% increase in volume to Japan and an impressive 34% boost to Central America. Nevertheless, smaller export destinations like Taiwan (-75%) and Thailand (-38%) witnessed decreases in dehydrated potato imports.

Despite constituting a smaller share of U.S. potato exports, potato chips experienced a 0.3% value increase, offset by a 1.3% reduction in volume. Meanwhile, seed potato exports demonstrated significant growth, with a 10.7% increase in value and an impressive 25.0% rise in volume.

The surge in U.S. potato exports, particularly in the fresh and dehydrated categories, underscores the dynamic nature of the global potato market. As American potatoes find new markets and face varying demands, staying attuned to these trends becomes crucial for farmers, agronomists, agricultural engineers, and farm owners navigating this flourishing industry.
