Steady Market Dynamics Amid Tightening Stocks and New Season Varieties
As colder, wet weather continues in Ireland, the demand and consumption of potatoes remain robust. Available stocks are tightening as new season varieties gradually enter the market. This market trend is expected to persist for at least another two weeks until more new season Queens are ready for harvesting. Reports indicate that some early planted varieties are yielding less due to the adverse weather conditions experienced post-planting.
Across Europe, the focus is on the new season crop and the availability of sufficient quantities to restart production for processing, especially after factory maintenance closures. This pressure is most intense in Belgium, where late planting has exacerbated the situation. Currently, the availability of early processing crops is expected to be very limited in July, with sufficient volumes not anticipated until mid-August. Some early “table” varieties are being harvested, with prices holding steady compared to last year, resisting the typical seasonal decline.
