According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), the target for potato cultivation in the district this year is set at 6,500 hectares across five upazilas. As of now, 60% of the planting work has been completed, and farmers are steadily making progress. The district’s focus on potatoes comes as the crop offers a relatively short production cycle compared to other crops, making it an attractive option for farmers looking to maximize their returns within a single growing season.
Sadar upazila, in particular, is a key contributor to the district’s overall potato production, accounting for nearly 50% of the district’s total output. The area’s favorable climate conditions—characterized by well-drained soils and moderate temperatures—make it ideal for potato farming. Khandaker Sohael Ahmed, the agriculture officer for Sadar upazila, emphasizes that the region’s conditions are particularly suitable for potatoes, further boosting farmers’ optimism for high yields this season.
To ensure a successful harvest, the DAE has been actively supporting farmers with the provision of high-quality potato seeds, which were distributed earlier this season. Dr. Md. Saiful Arifin, the deputy director of DAE, confirmed that agriculture officials are working closely with farmers on the ground to offer advice on planting techniques, pest management, and soil fertility. The consistent guidance and the use of certified seeds are expected to result in a significant increase in yield quality and quantity.
Looking ahead, the district is poised for a productive season. If the weather remains favorable, the anticipated bumper potato production will not only meet local demand but could also offer export opportunities, contributing to the local economy. Farmers are hopeful that the combination of favorable weather, high-quality seeds, and expert guidance will lead to another successful year for potato farming.
