A recent study shows that the Netherlands has a small market share in the import market for seed potatoes, while it is the most important European source of potatoes during the import season.
The research points to the risk that Dutch growers in Senegal will miss the boat, now that the import season is shrinking and major steps are being taken in the country to improve the quality of potato cultivation and to introduce local seed potato propagation. The question is how the Dutch sector can maintain a market share by playing a greater role in African potato cultivation. The most obvious option seems to be a more intensive cooperation with Senegalese growers from Africa.
