Research shows that 52% of the respondents have never heard of the Opperdoezer Ronde, even though this is one of the most authentic potatoes in the Netherlands.
For over 150 years this Dutch product has been harvested according to traditional methods and exclusively in the same region. The variety has not mutated since its origin, an exceptional fact in the world of potatoes. The taste of the potato is just as tasty as it was decades ago. Despite the fact that the Opperdoezer Ronde is a welcome guest among gourmets, the potato still appears to be unknown to a large part of the Dutch. Research by DirectResearch shows that 52% of the respondents have never even heard of the Opperdoezer Ronde.
Research
Among 518 respondents, 52% indicated that they were completely unfamiliar with the Opperdoezer Ronde. Only 11% were aware of both the potato and its associated PDO status. Of the respondents who were familiar with the Opperdoezer Ronde, 38% answered that they never eat the potato. A group of 4% indicated that they always eat the potato.
“Not just any potato”
The waxy potato has been growing since 1865 around the church of Opperdoes in North Holland, in an area of 160 hectares. The variety may only be grown in this piece of land. The potato is a real seasonal product, which is only available from June to October. To protect the uniqueness of the Opperdoezer Ronde, it has had a BOB (Protected Designation of Origin) status since 1996. Opperdoezer may not be grown in any other part of the world.
Traditional harvesting process
“The taste of the Opperdoezer Ronde is still as good as it used to be. The variety has not mutated, so that the unique taste has been preserved. With its characteristic and robust shape, deep eyes and thin skin, this potato is very recognizable. To protect the delicate skin of the potato, the Opperdoezers have to be harvested by hand. The traditional process has not changed for decades. A unique piece of history in contemporary times,” according to the organization of the Opperdoezer Ronde.
