Miratorg and “Vkusno — i Tochka” Postpone Potato Processing Plant Opening to 2026

The Russian agricultural giant Miratorg and the fast-food chain “Vkusno — i Tochka” have delayed the opening of their new potato processing plant in Oryol Oblast to the second half of 2026. Originally scheduled to commence operations in 2024 and later postponed to 2025, the project now faces an extended timeline due to economic and logistical challenges. The plant will be a major boost to Russia’s domestic potato processing industry, with a total investment of 19.2 billion rubles.

Key Features of the Plant

The plant is designed to process up to 120,000 tons of potatoes annually, creating 400 new jobs in the region. It will focus on producing French fries, potato wedges, and hash browns, primarily for the “Vkusno — i Tochka” restaurant chain. Additionally, the facility will supply dehydrated potato flakes for use in various food products, including snacks, chips, and baby food.

The raw materials for production will come from specialized potato varieties cultivated by Miratorg’s agricultural division. These varieties are chosen to meet strict quality standards for frying and dehydration, ensuring consistency in taste, texture, and processing efficiency.

Impact on the Russian Market

The postponement of the project comes at a time when Russia is seeking to strengthen its domestic food processing capabilities. The country has historically relied on imports for processed potato products, particularly from the European Union. However, geopolitical tensions and trade restrictions have driven a push for local production to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers.

In 2023, Russia’s potato processing industry faced significant challenges due to lower-than-expected harvests. According to the Russian Ministry of Agriculture, industrial potato production declined by 14% compared to 2022, leading to increased imports. The launch of this new facility is expected to mitigate such supply chain risks and stabilize domestic pricing.

Economic and Strategic Significance

  • Job Creation: The factory will provide employment opportunities for 400 workers in the region, supporting local economic growth.
  • Food Security: By increasing domestic production, Russia aims to reduce reliance on imported French fries and other processed potato products.
  • Agricultural Development: Miratorg’s involvement ensures a steady supply of high-quality potatoes, contributing to advancements in Russia’s agricultural sector.

While the delay in the plant’s launch may impact short-term market dynamics, the long-term benefits remain substantial. The project will strengthen Russia’s food processing infrastructure, boost local agricultural production, and enhance the country’s self-sufficiency in processed potato products. As the industry continues to evolve, investments in local processing facilities will play a crucial role in securing a stable food supply.
