According to Limestone Coast potato grower Terry Buckley, his produce can continue to be priced sensibly. This, while the cost of other fresh vegetables is rising. Buckley said consumers were turning to potatoes because they were affordable and that processing companies needed all the produce they could get.
He said potatoes were a good product because a lot them could be grown for a reasonably sensible price. Still, Buckley, who sells produce to Australian processors and on the export market, said producers were being hit with soaring fuel and fertilizer costs. He said growers were approaching a crossroads for pricing, as the cost of fertilizer has ballooned by more than 50 per cent, which is dramatically impacting the price of production for potato growers.
