In the scorching July heat, the potato fields of Gongmen Town, Zhangjiachuan County, are in full bloom, with purple flowers swaying in the wind. Farmers are busy applying pesticides using advanced sprayers mounted on tractors—a key step in ensuring healthy potato growth. This scene reflects the town’s commitment to high-quality seed potato production, a sector that has become a cornerstone of rural income growth.

Modern Farming Techniques Boost Efficiency and Sustainability

Zhangjiachuan County has integrated potato farming into its “4+2” modern agricultural system, leveraging fertile land, abundant water from the Fan River, and favorable rainfall. The Gongmen Town government has established six high-efficiency agricultural demonstration bases, including potatoes, winter wheat, corn, medicinal herbs, vegetables, and poultry farming.

One standout example is the 400-acre green seed potato base, where drip irrigation and mechanized spraying have revolutionized farming. Farmer Li Qiaoling notes, “In the past, we had to manually prune plants, but now machines spray pesticides evenly and quickly, saving half a day’s work per acre.” The base uses 13.2-meter-wide sprayers, reducing labor costs and pesticide use while improving precision.

Mechanization and Scale: Higher Yields, Lower Costs

During peak flowering, tractor operators like Sun Hai spray 60–100 acres daily, covering 2,000 acres of seed potato fields in Liangwan and Maoshan villages. Mechanization has cut pesticide use by 20% compared to manual methods, ensuring consistent quality. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), mechanized farming can increase yields by 15–25% while reducing input costs.

Employment and Skill Development for Farmers

The seed potato industry has created 200 stable jobs annually, from planting to harvesting and packaging. Deputy Mayor Ma Yong emphasizes that “farmers now participate in the entire production chain.” Many have transitioned from traditional farming to mastering modern agri-tech, boosting both income and expertise.

A Blueprint for Rural Prosperity

Zhangjiachuan’s potato seed industry demonstrates how mechanization, green farming, and government support can transform agriculture into a profitable venture. With higher yields, lower costs, and increased employment, this model offers valuable lessons for rural revitalization.

As the sun sets over the fields, farmers and technicians discuss the next steps—proof that innovation and collaboration are driving sustainable growth.
