This initiative, established by a resolution on December 8th, 2023, acknowledges the potato’s critical role as one of the world’s most important staple foods. The Union of the German Potato Industry (UNIKA) is taking this opportunity to emphasize the potato’s versatility and its substantial impact across the entire value chain, from breeding and planting to production and trade.
“The German potato industry employs 110,000 people across 27,600 companies. With a cultivation area of 264,700 hectares—approximately the size of Saarland—Germany stands as the largest potato producer in the EU,” stated Dr. Sebastean Schwarz, Managing Director of UNIKA.
