Nongshim announced on the 5th that it will begin producing its “Sumi Chip” snack using fresh Sumi potatoes starting on the 19th. The Sumi Chip is unique in that it exclusively uses domestically grown Sumi potatoes year-round, sourced primarily from Chungnam, Gyeongbuk, and Jeonbuk.

Superior Taste with Processing Challenges

Sumi potatoes contain higher sugar content compared to regular processing potatoes, giving them a superior taste and aroma. However, this also makes them more difficult to process. To address this, Nongshim has introduced specialized storage and vacuum low-temperature processing equipment tailored for Sumi potatoes. This innovation ensures consistent quality while preserving the potato’s natural flavor.

Revamped Packaging and Health-Conscious Adjustments

Nongshim has also updated Sumi Chip’s packaging design, replacing Chinese characters with Korean script and prominently highlighting key features, including:

  • 25% reduced fat content (compared to Nongshim’s regular potato chips)
  • 100% domestic Sumi potato usage

These changes align with growing consumer demand for healthier, locally sourced snack options.

Consumer Engagement and Promotions

To promote the new production batch, Nongshim is running several consumer events:

  • July 12: Pre-sale of Sumi Chips bundled with a “Gamtoli” character keyring on Nongshim Mall.
  • July 19: A giveaway event on Nongshim’s official Instagram, offering fresh Sumi potatoes and Sumi Chips as prizes.

Nongshim’s Sumi Chip demonstrates how agricultural innovation and consumer trends can drive product development in the snack industry. By optimizing processing techniques for high-sugar Sumi potatoes and emphasizing domestic sourcing, Nongshim enhances both product quality and sustainability. This approach not only supports local farmers but also meets modern consumer preferences for transparency and healthier ingredients.
