Nagaland is a northeastern state of India and is known as the ‘Land of Festivals’. It is also called the ‘Switzerland of the East’. The first-ever “Nagaland Potato Festival” is set to take place on May 10, 2024, at Jakhama local ground in Kohima, with the aim of celebrating Nagaland’s organic produce. The festival seeks to showcase and promote the local potatoes of Nagaland.
Noteably, Potatoes are among the major crops in Nagaland, alongside rice, corn, millets, pulses, oilseeds, sugarcane, banana, pineapple, orange, litchi, ginger, yams, cucumber, and arecanut. In March 2024, Nagaland reported a potato production of 55.982 tons, marking an increase from 55.911 tons in March 2023. The average yield per hectare is 60.74 quintals for small farms, 58.61 quintals for medium farms, and 56.82 quintals for large farms, showcasing the varying productivity levels across different farm sizes.
The event will emphasize the need to introduce modern farming practices to local farmers in Nagaland, where 70% of the population is engaged in agriculture. This move is aimed at enhancing farming methods for increased efficiency. The festival is expected to bolster the economy of farmers and villagers by attracting visitors, both local and tourists, creating a vibrant market atmosphere.
The Nagaland Potato Festival will foster partnerships with government agencies, NGOs, and other stakeholders to share crucial schemes and benefits for farmers, promoting sustainable agricultural practices.Through market research and networking, the festival aims to identify demand patterns, explore new market opportunities, and establish market linkages for farmers.
The planned festival coincides with the potato harvest period, offering insights into the two harvest times – January in paddy fields and April to September in mountain regions. It also intends to enhance farmers’ income by promoting agriculture-based enterprises, supporting value-added product development, establishing sustainable market linkages, and providing financial assistance.
The Nagaland Potato Festival anticipates around 5000 attendees and will feature traditional games, music, awards for the biggest potato and highest yield, over a hundred stalls with various potato varieties, demonstrations on potato cultivation, and the sale of organic potatoes at reasonable prices. The festival welcomes potato farmers from across Nagaland. Organic farmers are also encouraged to showcase their produce at the event.
