In a remarkable achievement for Russian agriculture, almost 2 million seed potatoes from North Ossetia were distributed across the country’s regions. According to TASS, the North Caucasus Interregional Department of Rosselkhoznadzor has controlled the export of 1,818,210 units and 85 tons of seed potatoes from North Ossetia since the beginning of 2024. The surge marks a significant increase from the same period in 2023, when just 139 tonnes were shipped.
The main recipients of these supplies are the Kaliningrad, Nizhny Novgorod and Moscow regions. In addition, significant volumes were supplied to the Krasnoyarsk Territory, Samara, Kostroma and Tula regions. Specific deliveries include 80,000 units to Novgorod, 27,000 units to Vologda and 10,000 units to Astrakhan.
Such impressive growth can largely be explained by the creation of the North Caucasus Selection and Seed Center in 2023 by FATE-AGRO. This modern enterprise specializes in the production of original seed potatoes, helping to meet the growing demand for high quality seed potatoes throughout Russia.
Increasing the production and distribution of seed potatoes is critical for several reasons. High-quality seed potatoes are essential for achieving higher yields and increasing crop resistance to diseases and pests. This development is in line with global trends in agriculture emphasizing sustainability and food security.
Evidence from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the UN highlights the importance of quality seed systems to achieve food security. High-quality seeds are a fundamental component of sustainable agricultural practices, contributing to increased productivity and sustainability. Thus, the activities of the North Caucasus Center not only support regional agricultural development, but are also consistent with these broader global goals.
The agricultural sector in Russia continues to innovate and expand, with seed potato production a key area of growth. The increased distribution of products from North Ossetia demonstrates the region’s vital role in supporting national agricultural production. With continued investment and advances in seed technology, Russia is poised to significantly increase agricultural production.
The increase in seed potato supplies from North Ossetia highlights the significant progress made in the region’s agricultural potential. With nearly 2 million products across Russia, the North Caucasus Seed Breeding and Production Center plays a key role in ensuring the availability of high-quality seeds. This development not only benefits regional farmers, but also contributes to the overall sustainability and productivity of Russian agriculture.
