In Tuymazy, an expert tells how to grow potatoes in the rainy season
Ramilya Gareeva, head of the Tuymazinsky branch of Rosselkhoztsentr, believes that gardeners’ concern is not in vain, because potatoes are a moisture-loving plant, but excess moisture can harm root crops and lead to crop loss. Especially if the air temperature is below normal, as happened in May – even snow fell in places!
Here are a few tips from an expert that can save your crop.
- If the tubers did not sprout as soon as the rains stopped, it is necessary to mulch the area. Special mulch, which tends to absorb excess moisture, can be purchased at seed stores.
- Further, every two days it will be necessary to loosen the soil – this will saturate the soil with oxygen, remove excess moisture and reduce the risk of diseases.
- Between the rows, make gutters through which excess moisture will drain.
- In rainy weather, potatoes lie in wait for a lot of diseases, the presence of which can be determined by the condition of the stems and leaves.
Phomosis. Dark spots form on the stems, tops begin to rot, small tubers form, the bush does not grow well. For treatment, drugs “Maxim” and “Ditan” are used.
Late blight. Dark brown spots appear on the leaves, throughout the bush and on the tubers, rot spreads, the vegetable loses its taste. For treatment, it is necessary to treat the culture with 1% Bordeaux liquid or Oxyhom, copper oxychloride, Kurzat R preparations.
Fusarium. The leaves fall, the stems turn brown with a white coating, the tubers quickly begin to rot, infecting the rest of the vegetables. You can cure a bush with copper sulfate, bactofite, phytosporin.
Blackleg. The bush withers and dies, the tubers become soft, when the potato is cut, a black formation is noticeable. Storage of such a vegetable is prohibited; infected potatoes are not eaten.
You can use the drugs only after the rains have passed, in compliance with the instructions for use.
