Hybrid Revolution Begins: Kenya Welcomes the First Hybrid True Potato Seed

The long-awaited moment for the potato world has arrived — the era of Hybrid True Potato Seed (HTPS) is officially beginning. On November 6–7, 2025, during Potato Days 2025, Kenya will host the unveiling of the first registered hybrid potato variety grown from true botanical seed — a breakthrough that promises to redefine how potatoes are cultivated and distributed worldwide.

A New Chapter for Global Potato Production

For years, researchers and breeders have pursued the dream of developing potato hybrids that combine genetic stability, disease resistance, and adaptability to local conditions. The launch in Kenya represents not only a scientific milestone but also a practical solution to the challenges faced by smallholder farmers — from inconsistent seed quality to limited access to clean planting material.

Where Science Meets the Field

At the Innovation Centre, visitors will have the chance to explore the technology behind HTPS — from breeding programs to seed propagation. Experts will explain how hybrid breeding allows for precision improvement of traits such as drought tolerance, nutrient efficiency, and yield consistency.

Meanwhile, the third floor will focus on Kenya’s experience, where pilot projects are already proving the transformative power of hybrid seeds in smallholder systems. Kenyan farmers participating in early trials have reported better germination rates, improved yields, and lower disease pressure, signaling a new dawn for potato production in the region.

Join the Revolution

Daily presentations will take place on both days at 11:00 and 14:30, offering an opportunity to learn firsthand about the science, the partnerships, and the human stories behind this “Resilience Revolution.”

This isn’t just an event — it’s the beginning of a new generation of potato farming built on innovation, sustainability, and collaboration.

Will Kenya’s Hybrid True Potato Seed become the blueprint for global potato production? The conversation starts at Potato Days 2025.
