Promotion of potatoes during the National Week of Causa Peruana
The Department of Huánuco continues to consolidate its position as one of the leading potato-producing regions in Peru. As part of the National Week of Causa Peruana, established by the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Midagri) of Peru, the Regional Directorate of Agriculture (DRA) organized an exhibition of different varieties of potatoes, as well as a tasting of more than 200 portions of the traditional dish “Causa”.
The goal of the event is to stimulate potato consumption, increase its commercialization and prevent seasonal overproduction, which affects farmers’ income.
Production indicators and key varieties
According to the director of the DRA, Yarushel Valenzuela Segura, Huánuco produces almost 800 thousand tons of potatoes annually, along with other major producing regions such as Cusco and Puno.
More than 300 varieties of potatoes are grown in the region, among which the following stand out:
- Tumbay
- Amarilla
- Huayro
- Zumaque Soncco
- Cacho de Toro
- Azúcar Cantina
These varieties are in high demand due to their quality and taste.
The economic importance of potatoes for the region
The governor of Huánuco, Antonio Pulgar, emphasized that potatoes play a key role in the region’s economy. According to the 2023-2024 campaign, potato sales brought farmers 448 million soles.
In addition, through the Papa Nativa project, the regional government supports 2,818 producers in 139 localities in the provinces of Yarowilca, Dos de Mayo, Ambo, Huánuco, Pachitea and Huamalíes.
Development Prospects
Huánuco continues to show steady growth in the potato sector, with the government actively supporting farmers through educational programs, subsidies and infrastructure projects.
