European late blight monitoring identifies changes in the population of Phytophthora infestans. In results for 2025 released in July 2026, EuroBlight reported more than 1,700 genotyped samples from 27 European countries. EU36 represented about 31%, EU43 about 10% and EU46 about 7% of those samples.

What the numbers do and do not mean
These percentages represent the composition of the sampled pathogen population. They are not percentages of fields infected or measures of crop loss. Weather, reporting intensity and sampling geography influence comparisons across years. Even in seasons with lower overall pressure, a damaging outbreak can develop when conditions favour infection.
Resistance management
Some pathogen populations show differences in fungicide sensitivity, creating a need for careful stewardship of modes of action. Disease management should integrate cultivar susceptibility, volunteer control, weather forecasting, timely monitoring and locally approved treatments. Genotype names alone are not proof of resistance to a particular active ingredient; susceptibility evidence is needed.

Looking ahead
Before the next growing season, advisers and growers should revisit the previous protection programme, inspect local monitoring results and follow current labels and resistance-management recommendations.
