The consumption of German ware potatoes is again showing a slight increase, Kartoffel-Marketing GmbH reported last week. But the market trade fluctuates strongly in times of corona, says Stefan Eusterbrock, co-director of the Landhandel in Westphalia with the same name. “The current prices for firm-boiling potatoes are between 4 and 14 euros per 100 kg. That is very extraordinary. We have rarely seen such a strange potato season at all.”
Good potatoes for storage from German cultivation are currently in great demand among German packers, but the growers’ willingness to issue is modest. Stefan: “The growers are still somewhat cautious, because prices tend to go up. In my opinion, good quality potatoes can also be sold for around 16 euros per 100 kg. However, I would recommend that the products be evenly distributed on the market. so that everyone can be supplied, because not all potatoes can be sold later at a high price. “
Difficult potato season
It has been an extremely difficult season so far, says the potato trader looking back. “Firm-boiling potatoes were traded for 5 euros per 100 kg during the harvest. Prices then increased slightly from October.” The strong price differences are also related to quality problems, according to Stefan. “This year there are relatively many low-quality products that are simply not in order optically. That is logically reflected in the market situation.”
The family business Eusterbrock sees itself as a link between growers and packers and serves customers throughout Germany. In contrast to industrial potatoes, corona has had a positive effect on the consumer potato market, they emphasize. “There is a slight increase in sales for consumption potatoes. Moreover, the appreciation for regional potatoes has apparently increased. This appreciation has been seen for some time, however: products that are traded under the regional name NRW often achieve a surcharge of approximately 2-3 euros per 100 kg. “
