BASF and StePac want to extend the shelf life of potatoes and vegetables with new packaging

German BASF and Israeli StePac will jointly develop a line of new environmentally friendly packaging for potatoes, vegetables and fruits. By transporting products in packaging that slows down the ripening process, both companies hope to do their part in the fight against global food waste.
For the new pack series, BASF is supplying chemically recycled polyamide 6 “Ultramid CcycledTM” to the packaging specialist StePac. This company uses chemically recycled plastic to package fresh and perishable food. The company was recently certified to use chemically recycled polyamide 6 in modified atmosphere packaging.

These atmospheric packs have a built-in humidity regulator that slows down the ripening process of potatoes, vegetables and fruits. At the same time, the quality and nutritional value of packaged products remain guaranteed during long-term storage or transportation over long distances. BASF 6 chemically recycled polyamide will make up 30 percent of the new packaging material.

Colombian exporter Jardin Exotics will be the first to use this xgo round packaging. BASF and StePac consciously choose the manufacturer’s product packaging. “When packaged in prepackaged retail packaging already at source, there is no longer a need to repackage upon arrival,” says StePac manager Gary Ward.
