Arkhangelsk Farmers Begin Potato Harvest: Record Yields and Government Support Boost Production

Farmers in Arkhangelsk Oblast have officially begun harvesting this year’s potato crop, starting in the Kholmogorsky District, the region’s leading area for potato production. According to regional authorities, around 40 tons have already been harvested, with large-scale operations set to continue until mid-October.

This season, local agricultural enterprises have planted potatoes across more than 1,300 hectares, with an estimated total yield of 22,000 tons. Governor Alexander Tsybulsky highlighted the preparations for the harvest, noting that 51 new pieces of machinery were purchased with regional budget subsidies to ensure efficiency.

Government Support Boosts Potato Farming

To enhance potato and vegetable production, the regional government has implemented several support measures, including:

  • Subsidies for increased production of potatoes and vegetables.
  • Funding for elite seed farming to improve crop quality.
  • Partial reimbursement for fertilizers and agrochemicals.
  • Grants for building and modernizing potato and vegetable storage facilities.

This year, nearly 39 million rubles (approx. $430,000 as of 2023 exchange rates) have been allocated to these initiatives, reinforcing the agricultural sector’s growth.

Challenges and Opportunities

While the region shows promising yields, potato farming in northern Russia faces challenges such as shorter growing seasons and climate variability. However, investments in storage infrastructure and high-quality seed programs are helping farmers mitigate risks. According to the Russian Ministry of Agriculture, national potato production has seen a 3% annual increase over the past five years, with northern regions like Arkhangelsk contributing significantly due to improved farming techniques.

Arkhangelsk Oblast’s potato harvest is off to a strong start, supported by government incentives and modern agricultural practices. With continued investment in technology and storage solutions, the region is poised to strengthen its role in Russia’s food security. Farmers and agronomists should monitor advancements in cold-resistant potato varieties and precision farming to further enhance yields.
