Strategic Collaboration Aims to Combat Aphid Infestations and Viral Infections
In an effort to tackle the pressing issue of aphid infestations and associated viral infections in seed potato crops, Albert Bartlett, a prominent supplier in the potato industry, has joined forces with Fera Science Ltd. Aphids, notorious for stunting potato growth and compromising tuber quality, are vectors for viruses such as Potato Leafroll Virus (PLRV) and Potato Virus Y (PVY), which can reduce ware crop yields by up to 50%.
This collaboration responds to the increasing aphid populations, driven by warmer winters and a lack of effective insecticides for seed crops. For the 2024 growing season, 45 growers are participating in a monitoring program funded by Albert Bartlett. These growers will submit sampling traps for analysis to gauge aphid populations and assess virus transmission risks.
Weekly reports from Fera Science will provide detailed aphid counts and virus risks, enabling growers to optimize their insecticide use. This monitoring effort aims to protect the health of the UK’s potato seed stock for the 2025 growing season. Aphids, which reproduce rapidly and spread to new plants via winged females, pose a significant challenge for control, especially as they often inhabit the underside of leaves. Natural predators like ladybirds and parasitic wasps also play a crucial role in managing aphid populations.
