In a move to meet the rising demand for convenient, ready-to-cook potatoes, The Little Potato Company in Alberta has launched a $39.5 million expansion project in Nisku. The endeavor aims to ramp up processing capabilities, particularly for seasoned varieties, catering to consumers seeking hassle-free options for roasting, microwaving, or grilling.
The expansion project is poised to double the company’s processing volume, significantly increasing the availability of its products in the market. Recognizing the importance of such investments in the food and ag processing sector, Alberta’s Agri-Processing Investment Tax Credit program has extended its support to the initiative. The program has granted The Little Potato Company a provisional tax credit of approximately $1.3 million, reflecting its commitment to stimulating investment, economic growth, and job creation in the province.
RJ Sigurdson, Alberta’s Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, emphasized the significance of programs like the Agri-Processing Investment Tax Credit in driving economic prosperity within the province. With Alberta leading the nation in potato production and the potato industry contributing over $2 billion annually to the provincial economy, initiatives that promote expansion and innovation in agri-processing are vital for sustained growth.
Under the tax credit program, which mandates a minimum investment of $10 million in agri-processing facilities, eligible expenditures receive a 12% non-refundable credit. The Little Potato Company’s new facility, spanning an impressive 240,000 square feet and providing employment to 224 locals, is poised to process approximately 125 million pounds of potatoes annually, marking a significant leap from its previous capacity.
As Alberta’s potato industry continues to evolve and adapt to changing consumer preferences, investments like this expansion by The Little Potato Company underscore the sector’s resilience and commitment to meeting the needs of modern consumers. With increased processing capabilities and a focus on convenience, the company is well-positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for high-quality, ready-to-cook potato products.
