Agricultural revitalization: Maine potato chip plant’s taste fuels Loring shopping center growth

A new chapter in Aroostook County’s agricultural landscape will open with the upcoming construction of the Taste of Maine Co. potato chip processing plant. at the Loring Mall. Designed to bolster the economic potential of the former airbase, the initiative marks an important milestone for local agriculture and manufacturing.

The ambitious project, led by Falcon Transportation owner Bruce Sargent and his team, marks a turning point in the region’s agricultural history. The $55 million facility, scheduled to begin construction by the end of July 2024, promises to be a cornerstone of growth, leveraging the rich potato-growing heritage of Presque Isle and the surrounding area.

Situated on a sprawling 30-acre site that once housed Damon and Corey Schools, the 80,000-square-foot facility symbolizes the convergence of tradition and innovation. Using locally grown russet and round white potatoes, Taste of Maine is poised to bring the essence of Maine’s agricultural wealth to the global stage, one chip at a time.

The plant’s strategic location near Loring’s main entrance highlights its symbiotic relationship with the community and its commitment to sustainability. With plans to begin operations in late fall 2025 and employ more than 75 people, the venture promises economic revitalization and community empowerment.

Moreover, Taste of Maine’s pledge to prioritize environmental stewardship sets a precedent for responsible business practices. Partnering with Buck Construction and leveraging the expertise of Idaho developers, the project embodies a combination of local ingenuity and global best practices.

Central to this endeavor is the integration of renewable energy solutions, exemplified by the construction of a nearby solar farm. This commitment to green energy not only underscores Taste of Maine’s commitment to sustainability, but also highlights its role as a catalyst for positive change in the region.

While addressing environmental concerns, project manager Daniel Martin is assuring stakeholders that the plant site is unaffected by ongoing PFAS investigations, ensuring smooth progress toward completion.

In essence, the Taste of Maine potato chip plant is a beacon of hope and progress, ushering in a new era of agricultural innovation and economic revitalization in Aroostook County. As construction begins and dreams take shape, a spirit of collaboration and determination is paving the way for a brighter and more sustainable future.
