Agrico, the potato cooperative, is making strategic moves in the industry with its intention to acquire the seed potato activities of The Potato Company (TPC). This acquisition marks a significant step for Agrico in expanding its acreage to meet growing demand and optimizing organizational synergy.
With a successful history of collaboration in the global seed potato market, this acquisition represents a natural progression for both organizations. For Agrico, acquiring TPC’s seed potato operations presents an opportunity to sustain growth objectives in the face of a shrinking market in Western Europe, ensuring its position as a stable and reliable industry partner.
Mark Zuidhof, CEO of Agrico, expressed enthusiasm for the acquisition, emphasizing its alignment with Agrico’s growth strategy in Western Europe. “This acquisition allows us to focus on sales and development of monopoly varieties while leveraging TPC’s extensive distribution network spanning over 60 countries.”
Established nearly two decades ago, TPC boasts over 450 hectares of seed potatoes grown on a pool contract basis and is actively involved in free trade. The company is known for its expertise in developing potato varieties resistant to potato cyst nematodes, adding significant value to Agrico’s portfolio.
Under the acquisition agreement, TPC will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary within the Agrico group, retaining its identity and workforce. Gaby Stet, owner of TPC, expressed optimism for the integration, anticipating further growth and professionalization alongside Agrico.
Both Zuidhof and Stet foresee mutual benefits from the acquisition, enhancing grower returns and fostering the growth and development of Agrico and TPC alike. This strategic move underscores Agrico’s commitment to innovation and market leadership in the potato industry, ensuring a bright future for both organizations and their stakeholders.
