Taking Action to Minimize Food Waste and Support Sustainable Farming Practices
Emiel, a dedicated organic farmer based in Graauw, finds himself facing a surplus of 8,400 kg of potatoes that fail to meet conventional standards. Despite their uniqueness attributed to unusually warm weather conditions, these potatoes, branded as Vitabella, fall short of the high cosmetic standards demanded by the market. Without intervention, they risk being relegated to animal feed—a fate deemed unworthy by Emiel and his allies at No Waste Army. Sadly, this isn’t the first time a significant portion of his harvest has failed to make the cut.
Emiel, a pioneer in organic farming since 2001, cultivates a diverse array of produce, including potatoes, cauliflowers, beetroots, broccoli, parsnips, pumpkins, and carrots in three colors. Notably, he also manages a food forest where visitors can immerse themselves in the farm experience, staying in one of four safari tents, enjoying guided tours, and indulging in delectable dinners.
