Changing Stories: How Gen Z is Revolutionizing Agriculture

Agriculture in Kenya is undergoing a quiet revolution. A new generation is stepping up Gen Z innovators who are redefining farming, bringing science, technology and entrepreneurship to every stage of production.

At the forefront of this transformation is Wakulima Help Desk, a youth-led agricultural advisory and innovation platform that is rewriting the narrative around farming. Their philosophy is simple yet powerful: “Science. Apply. Harvest. Kilimo na Sayansi, Faida kwa Mkulima.”

For decades, agriculture was viewed as labor-intensive, slow to modernize and often unappealing to young people. Today, that story is changing. Young agripreneurs are proving that farming can be scientific, innovative and profitable.

Gen Z Rising: Pioneering Soilless Potato Production

The spotlight is on soilless potato seed production, a modern approach that allows for high-quality minitubers and early-generation seeds. Using sterile growing media and carefully managed nutrient solutions, young innovators are producing cleaner, faster-multiplying seeds than ever before.

But this is not just about technology. Gen Z is taking control of the entire value chain. They set up hydroponic systems, monitor plant health, manage nutrient solutions and harvest minitubers, demonstrating that agriculture can be both scientific and entrepreneurial. The harvested minitubers are then transitioned to the field for subsequent seed production through successive seed multiplication cycles, ensuring farmers access clean and high-quality planting material. Building on this progress, they are now expanding their capacity into rooted apical cuttings and seeking support to establish an in vitro laboratory that will further strengthen clean seed production systems.

Science in Action: From Advisory to Harvest

At Wakulima Help Desk, science isn’t confined to a lab. It’s practical, actionable and farmer-focused.

Through trusted advisory services, the team supports farmers every step of the way:

  • Selecting the right varieties
  • Propagating seeds in soilless media
  • Harvesting high-quality minitubers
  • Transitioning to field production

This hands-on guidance ensures farmers don’t just receive instructions they journey alongside science, gaining skills and confidence at each stage. It’s a philosophy that guides everything they do: “Science. Apply. Harvest. Kilimo na Sayansi, Faida kwa Mkulima.”

From Media to Market: Bridging Lab and Field

Once harvested, minitubers move to field multiplication and commercial production. This bridge is critical: it ensures farmers have high-quality, early-generation seed, which translates to higher yields, better disease management and increased incomes.

By strengthening this pipeline, Wakulima Help Desk is helping farmers move away from recycled seed and adopt clean, modern systems, reinforcing the entire potato value chain.

A Generation Leading the Way

This is more than technology; it’s a movement.

Gen Z scientists, agripreneurs and advisors are proving that agriculture can be innovative, data-driven and connected to real-world farming challenges. By combining research, youth leadership and advisory services, Wakulima Help Desk is shaping a future where agriculture is exciting, profitable and sustainable.

The story of farming is changing and Gen Z is writing it. And at every step, they live by their guiding principle: “Science. Apply. Harvest. Kilimo na Sayansi, Faida kwa Mkulima.”
