According to recent data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the value of U.S. potato exports increased for all potato types from July to December 2022. In total, U.S. potato exports amounted to $1.6 billion during this period, up from $1.4 billion in the same period in 2021. The growth in exports was driven by a combination of factors, including strong demand from key export markets, a favorable exchange rate, and favorable weather conditions that boosted crop yields.
Among the types of potatoes that saw the strongest export growth were frozen potatoes and fresh potatoes. Frozen potatoes, in particular, saw a 17% increase in export value compared to the same period in 2021. The growth in frozen potato exports was driven by increased demand from Mexico, Canada, and Japan. Fresh potato exports, meanwhile, saw a 7% increase in export value, with strong demand from Canada and Mexico.
In terms of export markets, Mexico was the top destination for U.S. potato exports, accounting for 25% of all U.S. potato exports during the period. Canada was the second-largest export market, accounting for 21% of all U.S. potato exports, followed by Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan.
The U.S. potato export market is experiencing strong growth, driven by factors such as strong demand from key export markets, a favorable exchange rate, and favorable weather conditions. Farmers, agronomists, agricultural engineers, farm owners, and scientists who work in agriculture should keep an eye on this trend and consider opportunities to expand their exports to key markets such as Mexico, Canada, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan.
