Breeders of the Research Institute of Vegetable, Melon and Potatoes under the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Uzbekistan have created an early variety of potatoes “Tashkent Fairy Tale”, suitable for the soil and climatic conditions of our country. It was created by scientists Rustam Nizomov, Jasur Rakhmatullaev, Muhammadjon Rasulov and Dilshod Tursunov. The variety was patented by the Intellectual Property Agency in 2023.
The new variety has a number of advantages over other potato varieties. In particular, it is an ultra-early variety that ripens 10-12 days earlier than existing local early varieties.
Its growing season, i.e., from germination to leaf drying, is 65-70 days. The variety is demanding on highly fertile soil, resistant to viral diseases.
Growing potatoes in our country
For the harvest of 2022, in all categories of farms of the republic, there are only 221.5 thousand hectares of land for potatoes, of which 133.4 thousand hectares are allocated for farms and agricultural enterprises (93.5 thousand hectares for the main area, 13 thousand hectares between orchards and orchards and for re-sowing 26.9 thousand ha) and 88.1 thousand ha. thousand hectares of potatoes were planted in farms and household plots.
From these areas, 3.4 million tons of potatoes were grown (200 thousand tons more than in 2021 (107%)).
For reference: according to medical standards, the annual need of the population for potatoes is 3.4 million tons (the WHO norm is 96 kg per person per year).
For the harvest of 2022 in our country, farmers and agricultural enterprises use foreign high-generation potatoes such as Surya, Spunta, Ranomi, Passion, Malis, Louisana, Oreya and Constantia, which were grown in Uzbekistan.
Work is underway to create early, medium and late high-yielding varieties suitable for the soil and climatic conditions of the regions, resistant to diseases, heat and drought.
About 152 varieties of potatoes are included in the State Register of crops recommended for cultivation on the territory of the republic, of which 19 varieties were created by scientists from local research institutes. As a result of many years of research, 11 new local potato varieties have been bred.
For the 2023 harvest:
This year, a program was developed that should fully satisfy the population’s need for potatoes. It will produce 3.7 million tons of potatoes.
To do this, in 2023, 286 thousand hectares in all categories of farms, of which 143 thousand hectares are in farms and agricultural enterprises (106 thousand hectares for the main area, 9 thousand hectares between rows and 28 thousand hectares for repetition) and on the territory of the residential area it is planned to plant potatoes on 142,000 hectares.
Taking into account soil and climatic conditions, potatoes are grown on an area of 71,000 hectares in 40 specialized regions of the republic. 23 of them are used for growing seed potatoes, and Super Elite and Elite seeds are grown in 39 territories of 9 districts.
