In 2023, agricultural entities on Sakhalin Island demonstrated resilience, surpassing set targets despite adverse weather conditions. A total of 44,000 tons of potatoes and 21,000 tons of open-field vegetables were harvested, with collaborative efforts and strategic planning playing a crucial role. The deputy minister of agriculture and trade for Sakhalin, Vladimir Kravchenko, attributed this success to systematic work with seeds, the application of mineral fertilizers during plant development, and the sector’s technological upgrade, supported by government initiatives.
The participants in the regional agricultural meeting, including federal institution leaders, municipal representatives, agricultural enterprises, and farmers, engaged in a lively discussion analyzing the outcomes of the agricultural year. Challenges and achievements were evaluated, paving the way for defining goals for 2024. Among the strategic priorities identified for the coming year is the advancement of potato breeding and seed production.
Sergey Buldakov, the director of the Sakhalin Research Institute of Agriculture, presented the outcomes of potato variety trials. Noteworthy was the resumption of primary seed production, focusing on cultivating mini-tubers from the first-generation sterile potato plants. Buldakov highlighted the significant potential of domestically bred varieties, emphasizing the importance of aligning seed material as closely as possible with planting conditions.
A crucial aspect discussed was the need for potato seed material to adhere to optimal planting conditions. Evgenia Nikiforova, the director of the regional “Rosselkhoztsentr,” shed light on the potato tuber analysis conducted in 2023 to obtain certified seeds. Of the 7,200 tons of potatoes tested by Rosselkhoztsentr, 10% met the standards for certified seed production.
Concluding the meeting, Vladimir Kravchenko emphasized that state support for the industry, especially in the realm of potato breeding and seed production, would persist. Ensuring the availability of elite-category potato seeds from local production remains crucial for the region’s food security.
The agricultural achievements on Sakhalin Island in 2023, despite challenges, underscore the resilience and dedication of the region’s farmers and agricultural enterprises. The strategic focus on potato breeding and seed production for 2024 promises not only increased yields but also showcases a commitment to sustainable and innovative practices in agriculture.
