New perspectives for home gardeners: hybrid potato seeds enter the market
Dutch company Solynta, which specializes in the development and production of true potato seeds (True Potato Seeds), has entered into an agreement with Pieterpik, one of the largest suppliers of seeds for home gardening in Europe. This partnership will open up access to advanced hybrid potato varieties for gardeners throughout the European Union.
Potato seeds from Solynta are produced using natural hybrid breeding methods, without the use of GMO technologies. This method of breeding varieties allows for the creation of potato varieties that are resistant to diseases and climate change.
The main advantages of true potato seeds:
Purity and absence of diseases, unlike traditional seed tubers.
Long shelf life and compact size – seeds are easy to transport and store for many years.
Production can be scaled up, ensuring uninterrupted supplies all year round.
Improved characteristics: resistance to diseases, adverse climatic conditions and high yields.
Solynta and Pieterpik cooperation
As part of the agreement, Pieterpik will be responsible for the marketing and distribution of several types of Solynta true potato seeds in the EU. The products will be sold in Pieterpik branded packaging and through other companies purchasing seeds in bulk.
“Potato seeds are a new addition to our range. We see great potential in hybrid true potato seeds. It is a fun way to grow tasty potatoes at home, as well as other vegetables from seed,” says Bas Doorten, Managing Director of Pieterpik.
The ornamental value of plants grown from seed is also noted. Depending on the variety, the bushes bloom with white or purple flowers, decorating the gardens and balconies of home gardeners.
Solynta expands its commercial activities
Solynta is actively developing international sales, focusing on the development of new potato varieties for the professional market. However, the cooperation with Pieterpik opens the door for the company to the retail and home gardening segment.
“We see this as a great opportunity for gardening enthusiasts to enjoy innovations in potato growing directly in their own garden,” commented Xarain van Os, Business Development Manager at Solynta.
The future of hybrid potato seeds
The use of true potato seeds can be a revolution in the industry. They open up new opportunities not only for farmers, but also for small farms and urban gardeners. Prospects include:
Reduced costs for transporting and storing planting material.
The ability to quickly select varieties with desired characteristics.
Expanding potato cultivation in regions where traditional methods are limited.
The agreement between Solynta and Pieterpik therefore not only expands the range for European gardeners, but also confirms the growing interest in innovative potato growing methods.
