We continue to publish exclusive materials from the WPC (World Potato Congress), telling about the organization of an efficient seed potato production chain in China.
The World Potato Congress will take place from May 31 to June 3 in Dublin, Ireland. The event will bring together professionals including potato growers, wholesalers, packers, importers and exporters of both seed and ware potatoes.
With the help of TuMaMa, Tang Wei was able to obtain seed potatoes first through the local county agricultural bureau and then from some of the large specialized minituber seed suppliers (G0) in Qu Jing, Xuan Wei and Xun Dian districts.
The good quality of the original seeds allows him to sell G2 and sometimes G1 seeds locally to other farmers in the Zhaotong area. Key varieties: Qingshu 9, C 88, Weiyu 5, Xisen 3 and Xuanshu 2.
Farm management and crop cultivation practices
TuMaMa provides technical support along with 10 agronomists that Tang Wei has hired to work on all of his many potato fields in 4 main areas.
Tang Wei leases land from farmers and hires them to grow crops under a piecework scheme. Farmers should follow the recommendations of agronomists.
Sustainable potato production and storage
Potatoes are grown every summer season year after year! There are serious discussions about how to improve the soil by growing rotation crops and combining with legumes. These opportunities are evaluated by TuMaMa management.
Tang Wei rents warehouse space in Huo Dehong Township, Ludian County, and Zhao Yang District, both in Zhaotong City. Lucian County has plans to build a large potato storage facility. Tang Wei plans to rent space at the facility for a short period of time and then build his own storage facility and purchase his own processing/sorting equipment.
