Prince Edward Island Poised to Reclaim Potato Industry Prominence

In a remarkable tale of resilience, Prince Edward Island is on track to reclaim its historic status as one of the foremost sources of seed and table potatoes in North America and beyond. Despite facing significant challenges following the detection of potato wart in two fields in late 2021, the island’s potato industry is undergoing a transformation towards a brighter and more positive future, according to Greg Donald, General Manager of the Prince Edward Island Potato Board.

“It won’t be long before we’re back at the forefront. Whether you’re purchasing seed potatoes, fresh potatoes, or processed products, the most reliable source in the world will be Prince Edward Island,” stated Donald.

He cited the robust science and positive developments from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) as instrumental in this turnaround. Despite setbacks from potato wart detections, extensive CFIA testing and new initiatives are fostering a resurgence in the industry.

The CFIA has conducted nearly 50,000 potato wart tests, and its third annual national potato wart survey in 2023 revealed no new findings of potato wart on Prince Edward Island.

A new national potato wart response plan is being prepared for public consultation to replace the current management plan. This plan, coupled with CFIA guidance on biosecurity and potato seed production, is paving the way for Prince Edward Island to not only recover but also excel as a trusted leader in potato production.

“There won’t be any place in the world that has been tested as much as here,” affirmed Greg Donald, highlighting the island’s commitment to ensuring the highest standards of potato production and biosecurity.

The resilience and dedication of Prince Edward Island’s potato industry, coupled with rigorous testing and strategic initiatives by the CFIA, are propelling the island towards a brighter future. With a renewed focus on biosecurity and seed potato production, Prince Edward Island is poised to reclaim its historic position as a reliable and innovative leader in the potato industry.
