Maximizing Potato Yield: Innovative Fertilization Techniques Take Center Stage in Mexico

In Mexico, a recent training session in the Yaqui and Mayo valleys shed light on cutting-edge fertilization techniques, emphasizing the need for efficient practices as farmers face a competitive planting season. The potato cultivation area has expanded due to impressive economic yields in the 2023 harvest, prompting a dedicated effort to bolster the quality of this crucial tuber.

Master of Science, Enrique Guzmán, took the stage during the training session, delivering insights on the benefits and application methods of biofertilizers for potatoes and other crops. Backed by field trials and statistics, Guzmán highlighted the customary practice of applying the entire phosphorus and potassium dose pre-planting, along with a small proportion of nitrogen (approximately 20%) a few days before planting. The remaining nitrogen should be supplied starting from 20 days after emergence.

In his address, Guzmán stressed the importance of judiciously using these inputs, underscoring sustainability as a crucial aspect of production, especially in the southern region of Sonora, a benchmark in the agricultural sector.

As Mexican farmers gear up for a competitive planting season, the focus on efficient fertilization techniques, as discussed by Master of Science, Enrique Guzmán, becomes paramount. With the expanded potato cultivation area and heightened economic yields, optimizing the quality of this essential tuber through sustainable practices is not just a choice but a necessity for long-term agricultural success.
