From Local Staple to Golden Asset: How a County Built a $60M Integrated Potato Value Chain

For global agricultural professionals, the challenge of converting raw yield into stable, high-margin income is universal. A powerful model is emerging from Zhangjiachuan County in China’s Gansu Province, where potato farming has been systematically transformed from a subsistence activity into a coordinated, high-return value chain. The county now cultivates potatoes across 13,000 hectares (approx. 32,000 acres), but the real innovation lies not in scale alone, but in a deliberate strategy to control the entire process from seed to sale. This approach directly tackles the core issues of post-harvest loss and seasonal price collapses that plague producers worldwide.

The foundation was laid through land consolidation in areas like Liubao Town, where fragmented and abandoned plots were merged into contiguous, manageable farms. This enabled standardized planting and efficient field management, while creating a dual-income stream for villagers: rental income from their land and wages for farm labor. A resident like He Yingxia can earn over 10,000 RMB (approx. $1,400) annually from on-farm work. However, the pivotal intervention was investing in post-harvest infrastructure. The county has built standardized storage facilities with a total static capacity of 15,000 metric tons. A single 2,000-square-meter warehouse in Zhaowan Village can hold over 2,000 tons, preserving quality for off-season sales from harvest until April or May. As manager Yu Donghai states, “The time gap is the price gap.” This strategic storage allows them to capture a price premium of over 300 RMB (approx. $42) per ton, translating to a potential added value of 600,000 RMB (approx. $84,000) from one facility. By mitigating the 20-30% post-harvest losses common in developing regions (according to FAO estimates), they convert a “seasonal disadvantage” into a “profit differential.”

The Zhangjiachuan model provides a replicable blueprint for agricultural development focused on value capture rather than just production volume. Its success hinges on three integrated pillars: 1) Production Consolidation through land management for efficiency and labor equity; 2) Strategic Capital Investment in storage infrastructure to control supply flow and reduce losses; and 3) Market-Oriented Timing to leverage price premiums. The results are compelling: a total industry value surpassing 430 million RMB (over $60 million USD) and the creation of 50,000 person-times of employment in 2025. For agronomists, engineers, and farm owners globally, the lesson is clear: sustainable profitability and rural revitalization are achieved not merely by growing more, but by intelligently managing what is grown—controlling the chain from breeding to the point of sale to transform a humble tuber into a true “golden bean.”
