Emilia-Romagna Boosts Potato and Sugar Beet Sectors with New Regional Funding

Potatoes are a cornerstone of Emilia-Romagna’s agricultural economy, particularly notable for the production of the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Patata di Bologna. To support this essential sector, the regional government has introduced a new funding initiative totaling €700,000 for the year 2024.

Farmers can apply for these funds from July 15 until September 13 through the Siag information system. The support includes:

  • Patata di Bologna PDO: Up to €1,200 per hectare for those growing this specific variety.
  • Other Potatoes: A maximum contribution of €200 per hectare is available for farms using certified seed potatoes.

This financial backing aims to incentivize the use of certified seed and improve overall potato production quality in the region.

Support for Sugar Beet Cultivation

In addition to potatoes, the Emilia-Romagna region is also investing €1 million in sugar beet cultivation. This funding, available under the de minimis aid regime, is designed to support farmers growing sugar beets on a per-hectare basis.

Applications for this support will also be accepted through the Siag system until September 13. The grant for sugar beets will not exceed €150 per hectare. The primary goals of this funding are to maintain the agronomic and environmental benefits of sugar beet cultivation, support crop rotation practices, reduce plant health issues, and enhance soil quality.

Objectives and Impact

The allocation of these funds reflects Emilia-Romagna’s commitment to sustaining and advancing its agricultural sectors. By supporting the cultivation of key crops like potatoes and sugar beets, the region aims to:

  • Enhance Crop Quality: Financial incentives encourage the use of high-quality certified seeds and better farming practices.
  • Support Local Farmers: Direct funding helps farmers manage production costs and improve their financial stability.
  • Promote Sustainable Agriculture: Support for sugar beets helps in implementing effective crop rotations, improving soil health, and addressing phytosanitary issues.

Conclusion

The Emilia-Romagna region’s new funding initiatives for potato and sugar beet cultivation signify a strong commitment to advancing local agriculture. By providing financial support to these critical sectors, the regional government is not only bolstering the local economy but also promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Farmers in the region are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities to enhance their production and contribute to the ongoing success of Emilia-Romagna’s agricultural industry.
