Co-op has introduced new ‘Best of Season’ potato packs across its stores, becoming the first UK convenience retailer to adopt a seasonal variety approach. The range includes Roasting, Mashing, Baking, Salad, and Everyday packs, each containing a single British-grown variety selected for a specific cooking method. Varieties such as Jelly, Tyson, Karelia, and Maris Piper will change throughout the season to ensure optimal quality year-round. The initiative aims to support domestic potato growers and maintain a stable UK supply chain.
The move comes as British potato producers face increasing challenges from weather pressure, rising input costs, and declining reliability of traditional varieties. Co-op notes that newer varieties offer higher yields, lower input requirements, and improved pest and disease resistance. The programme follows year-long in-store trials and taste panels conducted with supplier Greenvale. Alex Godfrey, Chair of GB Potatoes, praised the approach for strengthening category sustainability, while Co-op’s Scott Saunders highlighted reduced waste and greater grower flexibility. Roasting packs will feature Maris Piper at peak season, transitioning to Tyson and Karelia later in the year.
