The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) has set a target to cultivate potatoes on 975 hectares of land across the district this year. This target includes areas in Barguna Sadar, Patharghata, Bamna, Betagi, Amtoli, and Taltoli upazilas, which have become key hubs for potato production. By mid-season, farmers have already cultivated potatoes on 159 hectares, and with favorable weather continuing, they are confident that the remaining areas will be planted in the coming days.
Farmers like Altaf Hawladar from Chawra village are enthusiastic about the prospects of another profitable potato season. “Potato farming is more profitable than other crops, and with the help of the Department of Agricultural Extension, we’re giving it our best effort,” he explains. “The availability of seeds and fertilizers at reasonable prices has made the cultivation process easier and more manageable.”
This year, the district has witnessed a significant rise in potato farming due to the higher profit margins seen in the previous season. According to Dr. Abu Syed Md. Jobaidul Alam, Director of DAE, the price of potatoes has remained favorable throughout the year, motivating farmers to grow more. “There is no shortage of seeds in the district, and we have been working to ensure that farmers receive quality seeds and fertilizers at fair prices,” he states.
The district has been proactive in ensuring the availability of high-quality seed potatoes, which are vital for a successful crop. The DAE has worked closely with local farmers to distribute seeds that are resistant to diseases and suitable for the region’s climate. This attention to seed quality is expected to significantly improve yields, making the farmers more confident in their investment.
Looking ahead, farmers are hopeful that the continued good weather and support from agricultural experts will lead to another successful season. “If the weather remains favorable, we expect a bumper yield of potatoes this year,” says Dr. Alam, underlining the importance of timely planting and good crop management practices.
In addition to improving seed quality and providing guidance, the DAE has emphasized the need for sustainable farming practices to ensure the long-term viability of potato cultivation in the region. The use of integrated pest management (IPM), proper irrigation, and crop rotation are just a few of the strategies being promoted to help farmers mitigate risks and maximize their yields.
