In a recent Variety Evaluation Committee (VEC) meeting convened by the Plant Sciences Division of the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC), stakeholders emphasized the significance of collaborative efforts to develop potato varieties tailored to local conditions. Led by Dr. Imtiaz Hussain, the committee reviewed 19 proposals for new potato varieties and evaluated the progress of previously recommended varieties.
Among the decisions made, Montreal emerged as the sole processing variety approved for commercial cultivation, while several table varieties, including Meryem, HZD-II-3732, and Quintera, were recommended for widespread adoption. Additionally, four new table potato varieties – Tornado, Electra, Fundago, and Rainbow – received unanimous approval, signaling a concerted effort to bolster potato production and address food security concerns.
Moreover, the committee endorsed specific varieties for processing, with Montreal and SHC 1010 highlighted, subject to stringent seed quality standards. In a bid to decentralize seed multiplication efforts, local stakeholders were empowered to engage in the process, exemplifying a commitment to inclusivity and community involvement in agricultural practices.
The committee also implemented enhancements to the evaluation process, including adjustments to the System Yield and Adaptability Trials (SYS/AT), aimed at ensuring a more thorough assessment of potato varieties. Looking ahead, the iterative nature of decision-making, coupled with a focus on evidence-based recommendations, underscores a commitment to continuous improvement in Pakistan’s potato cultivation landscape.
The outcomes of the VEC meeting underscore the critical role of collaboration in advancing agricultural practices and addressing food security challenges. By prioritizing the development of locally adapted potato varieties and fostering inclusivity in decision-making processes, stakeholders are laying a foundation for sustainable agricultural growth in Pakistan.
