At the Branston site in Lincolnshire, work has started on a new £6 mln facility, which will be used to extract high grade plant protein from potatoes
Branston is working alongside B-hive Innovations as part of a collaborative project to improve potato crop utilization. The factory is the first of its kind in the UK and will see the introduction of bespoke technologies and capabilities to meet the growing demand for UK grown plant-based ingredients.
According to an article on branston.com¸ the facility will convert low-value potatoes into clean-label functional protein, which can be used in vegetarian and vegan foods. It will also generate starch-based products for a range of manufacturing applications.
Turnover nearly £200 mln for year to 26 July 2020
Turnover has edged towards the £200 mln mark at Branston during its latest financial year. The company, which supplies supermarkets such as Tesco, as well as selling under its own brand, has reported a turnover of £196 mln for the year to 26 July 2020, up from £152.4 mln in 2019. Its pre-tax profits also grew from £4.4 to £7.3 mln.
Managing director James Truscott told insidermedia.com: “Despite the second half of the year being affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, we are pleased to be reporting strong growth figures overall. We are very proud of our team’s response to the pandemic and the part we have played in keeping the UK fed.”
