Ukraine’s Potato Cultivation Institute has developed a high-yield potato variety that can produce up to 100 tons per hectare, i.e. 6 times the country’s current average potato yield (17 t/ha).
The National Academy of Agricultural Sciences of Ukraine reported that the new variety had been called Kniagynia.
Ukraine’s Plant Variety Register for 2021 includes 196 potato varieties. 85 of these are national selections, 66 of which were created at the Potato Cultivation Institute.
“The varieties possess high adaptation properties, are resistant to drought and heat, have a longer period of effective reproduction, and high flavor,” the institution’s press service stated.
Between 2016 and 2020, twenty of the varieties selected by the Institute were registered in the State Register of Plant Varieties that are suitable for distribution in Ukraine.
Potato cultivation is one of Ukraine’s most important agricultural productions. In terms of gross potato production, Ukraine is one of the world’s top three producers. In 2019, world potato production amounted to more than 371.3 million tons, 23 million tons of which were produced in Ukraine.
