In a recent virtual seminar hosted by the Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO), stakeholders in Jamaica’s agro-processing and food and beverage manufacturing sectors received a compelling call to explore the vast potential of the export market. Shanique Edwards, Acting Manager for Agri-Business Exports at JAMPRO, underscored the burgeoning demand for Jamaican food products, both within diaspora communities and among mainstream consumers worldwide.
Tapping into Growing Demand: With food export sales soaring to over US$256 million by August 2023, Edwards highlighted a plethora of opportunities awaiting local producers. She emphasized the allure of ready-to-eat Jamaican delicacies, ranging from breadfruit and mango to yam, cassava, sweet potato, turmeric, ginger, and an array of value-added products.
Targeting Diaspora Markets: Edwards emphasized the strategic importance of catering to the extensive diaspora market, comprising over 1.1 million individuals in the United States, 800,000 in the United Kingdom, and 309,000 in Canada. Additionally, she highlighted sub-markets linked to the tourism industry in these regions, presenting lucrative avenues for export growth.
Meeting International Standards: To capitalize on export opportunities effectively, Edwards advised local companies to adhere to international labelling standards and embrace technological innovations such as automation and blockchain. By enhancing productivity, reducing costs, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality regulations, businesses can bolster their competitiveness in global markets.
Embracing Innovation: The adoption of automation and blockchain technology emerges as a pivotal strategy for streamlining operations and enhancing supply chain transparency. Such innovations not only optimize productivity but also instill consumer confidence by ensuring product traceability and adherence to stringent quality benchmarks.
A Call to Action: As Jamaica’s agro-processing sector gears up for international expansion, stakeholders are urged to seize the momentum and capitalize on the burgeoning global appetite for authentic Jamaican flavors. By embracing innovation, targeting key markets, and maintaining a commitment to excellence, the stage is set for Jamaica to emerge as a prominent player in the global food export arena.
With a rich culinary heritage and a wealth of natural resources, Jamaica stands poised to captivate taste buds and carve out a niche in the global marketplace. As exporters embark on this exciting journey, collaboration, innovation, and a steadfast dedication to quality will serve as the cornerstones of success in unlocking the full potential of Jamaica’s agro-processing industry on the world stage.
