Uttar Pradesh plays a pivotal role in India’s potato production, contributing approximately 35% of the country’s total output. The state’s agricultural landscape is deeply intertwined with potato farming, engaging over 6 lakh farmers. In the previous year, Uttar Pradesh achieved a remarkable production of 243 lakh metric tonnes of potatoes, covering a vast cultivation area of 6.94 lakh hectares. Notably, the current average market price stands at Rs1,039 per quintal (as of March 7, 2024), marking a substantial 63% increase from the previous year.
The Government of Uttar Pradesh has reaffirmed its unwavering dedication to ensuring the welfare of potato farmers in the state, with a primary focus on ensuring the highest value for their produce. This commitment is underscored by the government’s proactive measures to streamline potato storage and sales processes, aiming to eliminate any inconveniences faced by the farmers.
In a recent meeting of the horticulture department, paramount importance was placed on ensuring a seamless storage and sales experience for potato farmers. Emphasizing the proactive approach, the government stressed the need for all Mandis to be made operational before the onset of the potato season, highlighting its unwavering support for farmers and the agricultural ecosystem.
To enhance transparency and access to vital information, directives were issued to ensure daily updates of potato rates, cold storage capacity, and availability on relevant portals at both district and headquarters levels. This commitment to real-time information dissemination reflects the government’s dedication to staying informed and responsive to the needs of potato farmers. Additionally, the call for daily reports from district levels underscores the government’s data-driven approach to address farmers’ concerns. The proposed modernization of existing cold storage facilities aligns with the government’s vision of enhancing infrastructure to support agricultural activities.
The proactive measures implemented this year have resulted in a 3% increase in the number of cold storage facilities and storage capacity compared to previous years. Presently, Uttar Pradesh boasts 2,048 cold storage units with a total capacity of 17,092,355.37 metric tonnes, offering 11,964,648.76 metric tonnes of storage space. This expansion of storage infrastructure underscores the state’s commitment to preserving the quality and value of the potato harvest, contributing to enhanced market stability, and sustained agricultural growth.
