Despite the sharp increase in prices for frozen French fries, in particular from the Netherlands and Belgium, demand in the export market continues to grow.
Dutch potato processors produced more than 2 million tons of french fries and other potato products last year, according to NAO and Vavi. About 85 percent of this production is intended for export. For this, processors used almost 4 million tons of french fries.
Export prices for frozen french fries rose to almost 1,200 euros per ton in the last months of 2022. This is more than 1 euro per kilogram and about 65 percent more than prices a year ago. This is reported by Friturwereld, a knowledge platform for the frying sector based on information from Boerenbusiness.
The rise in prices is a consequence of high inflation, rising production costs, limited availability of potatoes in Europe and continued demand. Despite higher prices, global demand for European French fries, especially from the Netherlands and Belgium, continues to grow. Analysts suggest that the market growth will be about 2 percent per year.
