This week, a start was made in Lelystad on the development of the potato demo fields for PotatoEurope 2021
The potato trade fair offers visitors a glimpse into the future of the potato sector this year at the beginning of September . In addition, fourteen high-quality demonstration fields will provide a wealth of information on current topics.
Now that the potato growing season is about to start with the start of spring in the Netherlands, spring work is in full swing in Lelystad. Fourteen potato demo fields will be installed in the heart of the PotatoEurope exhibition grounds. Various leading companies in the sector will present products that have already existed for some time at this prominent location during the fair and will introduce innovations that can make a (sustainable) contribution before, during and after cultivation.
The demo fields are being constructed under the watchful eye of coordinator and manager of the research section Pierre Bakker of Wageningen University & Research (WUR) Open Crops in Lelystad.
“We are now putting out fourteen different demo fields for PotatoEurope 2021 under good field conditions. This will contribute to presentations that will give visitors an interesting insight into developments in the sector in September,” says Bakker.
Current themes
The interpretation of the various potato demonstrations is rapidly taking shape. The focus is on current themes and issues in potato cultivation. BASF Nederland BV, Bayer, Belchim, Certis Europe, FMC, Kreglinger Europe NV and UPL, for example, show the latest developments in the field of crop protection. In addition, seed potato trading houses Agrico, HZPC, Schaap Holland and STET participate in variety demonstration fields, with a focus on sustainable potato varieties, among other things. At the Nufarm demo field, this developer and producer of crop protection solutions will show visitors one of their novelties: electric
haulm killing.
Vandinter Semo, breeding company for lure and catch crops that fall under the heading of green manure crops, will focus on nematode-resistant green manure in its own demo field. In
the demo field of Horizon Flevoland, a regional development company and a PotatoEurope partner, the focus will finally be on Agriculture: Multiple Flavors / Robust Potato Varieties.
“What’s Now, What’s New and What’s the Future”
Thanks to the varied occupation of the demo fields, visitors can immediately see in practice what they can do in their day-to-day operations with the varieties, techniques and innovations presented. The products and innovations of the companies represented in the demo fields not only provide visitors with tools to renew their current business operations where necessary, but also provide information about a sustainable future for the potato chain. According to the organization, this makes them perfectly in line with the PotatoEurope 2021 exhibition theme, “What’s Now, What’s New and What’s the Future”, with which the organization wants to give visitors insight into developments in the potato chain and the future of the sector.
PotatoEurope is an international event exclusively dedicated to the entire potato chain. The event takes place every year in one of the fair’s four partner countries: Germany, Belgium, France and the Netherlands. The organization expects to welcome more than 275 exhibitors from all over the world and more than 16,000 visitors on September 1 and 2, 2021.
