The spring planting campaign has kicked off in the province of Matanzas, Cuba, with a strong emphasis on rustic, short-cycle crops, particularly bananas using the extradenso method, while preparations are underway for the upcoming potato harvest.
Lázaro Bello Rodríguez, Deputy Delegate of Various Crops in the region, highlighted that the potato harvest is set to commence at the Gispert Basic Cooperative Production Unit in Colón, and the Lenin Agroindustrial Company in Jovellanos.
Matanzas plays a crucial role in the regional balance and contributes significantly to other provinces. Moreover, it boasts extensive experience in agroecological cultivation, backed by expert guidance from the Indio Hatuey Experimental Station for Pastures and Forages.
Despite facing resource constraints, Bello Rodríguez affirmed that they are pursuing various programs as part of their comprehensive development strategy, particularly focusing on the spring campaign to enhance self-sufficiency in agricultural production.
