On April 17, the Russian Ministry of Agriculture presented the “Science-based Solutions for Potato Business” program, featuring the best varieties of domestically bred potatoes. The event, which took place at the Timiryazev Agricultural University, was attended by Oksana Nikolaevna Lut, First Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Vladimir Ivanovich Trukhachev, rector of the university, and other representatives of industry associations and retailers.

Nineteen varieties of potatoes, created under the Federal Scientific and Technical Program for Agriculture Development, were selected for presentation. Each variety was showcased in raw and cooked forms, including boiled, fried and baked potatoes, and vacuum-packed potatoes.

The development of domestic breeding is essential for ensuring the country’s food security. In 2022, a number of leading research centers were transferred to the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Agriculture, bringing scientific research closer to the real needs of business and consumers. From 2023, the ministry will increase the subsidy for the creation or modernization of breeding and seed-growing centers from 20% to 50%.

The event was held at the Timiryazev Agricultural University, which has been at the forefront of Russian potato breeding for over 100 years. Its founder, Professor Alexander Georgievich Lorkh, was a graduate and professor of the university. The rector, Vladimir Trukhachev, expressed his gratitude to the organizers, especially Oksana Lut, for the opportunity to hold the event at the university. He noted the symbolic significance of the event taking place where Russian potato breeding began.
