Potato cultivation has long been an essential aspect of agriculture in India, providing valuable nutrition and economic opportunities for farmers. The introduction of Kufri Uday to Koraput marks a turning point in potato farming, offering exciting prospects for higher yields and improved quality.

According to recent data from the Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI), Kufri Uday has demonstrated remarkable performance across various parameters. In field trials conducted in multiple locations, the variety has exhibited a higher yield potential compared to many other traditional cultivars. On average, Kufri Uday yields 18-22 tons per hectare, while some farmers have even reported yields of up to 25 tons per hectare in optimal conditions [Source: CPRI Annual Report 2022]. This exceptional productivity is a promising sign for addressing food security challenges and enhancing farmers’ livelihoods.

Apart from its impressive yield potential, Kufri Uday boasts excellent taste and appearance, making it equally popular among consumers. The smooth texture, rich flavor, and appealing appearance of the tubers have garnered appreciation in both domestic and international markets. As a result, farmers cultivating Kufri Uday can tap into lucrative markets and potentially increase their income.

Despite its immense potential, obtaining sufficient seed supply for initial trials was a significant hurdle. However, with the growing interest in Kufri Uday, the focus has shifted towards establishing an Autonomous Research Center (ARC) for seed production in Koraput. This forward-looking initiative aims to secure a consistent supply of high-quality ARC seeds for farmers in Odisha, reducing dependency on external sources and ensuring affordability [Source: Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment, Odisha].

The introduction of Kufri Uday in Koraput has set the stage for a transformation in potato farming. Its exceptional qualities, from high yields to great taste, have won over farmers and consumers alike. By localizing seed production through the ARC system, the region can look forward to increased agricultural self-sufficiency and improved socio-economic conditions for farming communities.

With the Kufri Uday variety taking root in the fields of Koraput, a promising future awaits the agricultural landscape of the region. As the demand for this remarkable potato variety grows, farmers, agronomists, agricultural engineers, farm owners, and scientists working in agriculture are encouraged to embrace this innovative cultivar and witness the positive impact it brings to the region’s agriculture.
