The Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT) has identified Ruvuma as a region boasting fertile land conducive to round potato cultivation, offering a transformative opportunity for local residents.
Geoffrey Kirenga, the Managing Director of SAGCOT, highlighted the region’s agricultural potential following comprehensive soil tests conducted across Songea, Namtumbo, and Madaba districts. The subsequent demonstration farming activities yielded encouraging results, showcasing the viability of potato farming in the area.
Expressing SAGCOT’s commitment to fostering successful and sustainable round potato cultivation, Kirenga emphasized the organization’s dedication to driving positive change in farmers’ lives through agricultural initiatives.
Research conducted by SAGCOT in Songea District between 2020 and 2024 demonstrated the promising prospects of round potato production, with reported yields of over 10 million Tanzanian shillings per acre.
Mayor Michael Mbano of Songea Municipality lauded the agricultural advancements, noting the significant potential of round potato farming with one acre capable of producing up to 200 bags of potatoes. He praised SAGCOT and its partners for illuminating hidden agricultural opportunities and expanding the horizons of local farmers.
SAGCOT’s focus on promoting commercial agriculture development involves empowering small and medium-sized farmers by providing training, facilitating access to financial resources, and establishing connections to reliable markets for their agricultural produce.
